What it is

The geology.

Ammolite carries the formula CaCO3 (aragonite) with trace Fe, Mn. It belongs to the orthorhombic (aragonite shell layers) system. Its listing category is biogenic gem (iridescent fossil aragonite).

It sits at 3.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale. The surface reads greasy to vitreous with intense iridescence. Light behaviour is opaque (iridescent surface layer). Specific gravity runs 2.6 to 2.85. The streak is white to pale yellow. It breaks with flaky; shell layer fractures unevenly, usually stabilized.

Care & handling.

At 3.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale this is a soft material. Keep it as a display piece, store it apart from harder stones, and skip daily-wear settings.

It breaks with flaky; shell layer fractures unevenly, usually stabilized, which is worth knowing before you set it or drop it.

Clean it by hand, dry it properly, and keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners and hot steam.
