Zircon carries the formula ZrSiO₄. It belongs to the tetragonal system. The trade files it under nesosilicate.
It sits at 7.5 on the Mohs scale. The surface reads adamantine to vitreous. Light behaviour is transparent to translucent. Specific gravity runs 4.6 to 4.7. The streak is white. It breaks with indistinct cleavage; conchoidal fracture.

Anything that scratches, burns or dissolves the piece is a lab job. Get it appraised rather than testing it apart.
Care & handling.
At 7.5 on the Mohs scale it stands up to everyday wear. It will still chip on a hard knock, so treat edges and points with respect.
It breaks with indistinct cleavage; conchoidal fracture, which is worth knowing before you set it or drop it.
Warm water and a soft cloth clean almost everything. Ultrasonic tanks, steamers and household cleaners are where pieces get ruined.
