Carnelian, Sunstone, or Orange Calcite?
Three warm orange stones, three completely different minerals. Here is how to tell them apart at a glance, no lab required.
Orange is one of the easier crystal colors to sort out. The same warm glow can come from quartz, a feldspar, or a soft carbonate, and each one gives itself away with a simple check.

Most orange stones sort out with three checks: hardness, how the surface catches light, and a drop of vinegar. Carnelian is hard, translucent quartz. Sunstone is a feldspar that flashes metallic glints as you tilt it. Orange calcite is soft and fizzes in vinegar. And much carnelian sold is heat-treated agate.
Start With Three Quick Checks
Before you name an orange stone, watch how it behaves, not just its color. Orange minerals run from hard quartz to soft carbonate, and each answers a simple home test differently.
Carnelian is quartz, a 7 on the Mohs scale, hard enough to scratch glass. Sunstone, a feldspar, sits just behind at 6 to 6.5. Orange calcite is only a 3, scratched by a steel key. That gap alone flags the soft one.
Tilt the piece toward a lamp. Sunstone throws tiny metallic glints that shift and flash, an effect called aventurescence. Carnelian glows evenly, translucent at the edges. Calcite has a soft, waxy sheen and never sparkles.
A single drop of white vinegar tells you the most. On orange calcite it fizzes, because calcite is a carbonate that reacts with mild acid. On carnelian or sunstone, both silicates, nothing happens.
The Three Orange Stones People Mix Up
Three warm-toned stones cause most of the confusion. They read as orange at a glance but belong to three different mineral families, with very different hardness and character.

Carnelian and the Heat-Treatment Question
Carnelian is the orange stone most people picture, a translucent chalcedony colored by iron oxide, mostly fine-grained hematite. What surprises many buyers is that much of it started as pale agate or chalcedony, heated to deepen the color. Heat converts the paler iron minerals to red hematite, a long-standing practice that is not a scam when it is disclosed.
Natural and heat-treated carnelian both owe their warmth to the same iron oxide, so a reputable seller simply tells you which one you hold. Neither is fake. What matters is honest labeling and a fair price.

Natural carnelian carries soft, diffuse color variation, not a flat, uniform brightness.
Dyeing is different. Dyed agate sold as carnelian tends to show flat, uniform color, often with dye pooling in cracks. A cotton swab dipped in acetone, rubbed on a hidden spot, lifts color from a dyed stone but not from naturally colored carnelian. Sunstone: The Orange Stone That Glitters

Sunstone's shimmer, called aventurescence, comes from tiny mineral platelets aligned inside the feldspar.
Sunstone is the easiest orange stone to identify once you catch it in the light. It is a feldspar, and its signature glitter, called aventurescence or schiller, comes from countless tiny platelets of copper, hematite, or goethite lined up inside the stone. When light strikes those aligned flakes they flash together, so the sparkle shifts as you turn the piece.
That moving glint sets sunstone apart from carnelian's steady, even glow. Sunstone is a little softer than quartz, around 6 to 6.5, so it suits earrings and pendants better than rough daily wear. Orange Calcite: Warm, Glowing, and Easily Scratched
Orange calcite is the gentle member of the group, a warm, glowing stone that looks gem-like but behaves nothing like quartz. It is calcium carbonate, only a 3 on the Mohs scale, soft enough to scratch with a steel blade. Its color is a soft amber to honey orange, usually translucent and waxy, and broken pieces show the flat, angled faces of its rhombohedral cleavage.

The Other Oranges: Garnet, Amber, and One to Respect
A few more orange materials turn up regularly, and one of them deserves a note of caution.
The brightest, most gem-like orange usually belongs to a garnet such as spessartine or hessonite. Garnets are transparent and glassy, hard at around 7 to 7.5, with real fire rather than carnelian's soft glow.
Warm orange amber is not a mineral but fossilized tree resin. It is very light, warm rather than cold to the touch, and soft, roughly 2 to 2.5. Copal and plastic are common stand-ins, covered in real amber versus fakes.
