Aries runs from March 21 to April 19, and the stones tied to it run hot: brick red, glassy red and gold, a spark of orange that catches the light. That fits the fire sign's drive, but the color almost always traces back to one thing, iron. Here is what those stones actually are, where they come from, and what the birthstone facts really say.
Aries's birthstones, the calendar version
Because Aries straddles two months, it carries more than one traditional birthstone. March leans on aquamarine and, in the older tradition, bloodstone, a green stone flecked with red. April's stone is diamond, which we do not carry. The sign's real signature, though, is its color rather than any single gem: Aries stones tend to run red, the shade of its ruling planet Mars. None of this is a rule you have to follow. It is simply the lineage, and it shifts with which side of the month you were born on.

Red Jasper is the brick-red stone with a smooth, opaque body and no shine-through. It is a dense form of chalcedony, quartz grown in microscopic grains, and its deep red is iron oxide woven all the way through it. It is a solid 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, hard enough to have been carved into seals and tools for thousands of years. Ours is raw from South Africa. Fire Quartz
Fire quartz, also called hematoid quartz, is clear quartz shot through with red and gold. Those streaks are hematite, iron oxide that grew inside the crystal as it formed, which is where the fiery look comes from. The quartz itself is a hard 7 on the Mohs scale. Sunstone
Sunstone is the warm stone that throws a glittering orange spark when you turn it toward the light. That flash, called aventurescence, comes from tiny flat platelets of copper or hematite inside the feldspar catching the light all at once. It sits around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. What the association actually means
