Blue tiger eye, better known to mineralogists as hawk's eye or falcon's eye, is the blue-grey sibling of golden tiger's eye. Both are fibrous quartz shot through with the remains of a blue asbestos mineral, and both show a moving band of light called chatoyancy. Where golden tiger's eye has oxidized to warm brown, hawk's eye keeps the cooler blue of the original fibers.

What it is

The geology.

Hawk's eye is a form of macrocrystalline quartz, SiO2, that grew together with fibers of crocidolite, a blue asbestos mineral in the riebeckite family. As the silica formed around and through those fine parallel fibers, it locked in their blue-grey color and their silky, light-reflecting structure. The result is a hard, compact stone at 7 on the Mohs scale.

That trapped fibrous structure is what creates chatoyancy, the shifting band of light that slides across the surface like the reflection in a cat's eye. In hawk's eye the body stays blue-grey to slate blue because the iron in the fibers has not oxidized. When it does oxidize to golden and brown iron oxides, the same material becomes the familiar golden tiger's eye. The two often appear in the same piece.

Where it comes from

The origins.

South Africa is the dominant source, especially the Northern Cape and the wider Griqualand West area, where the great tiger's eye and hawk's eye deposits occur in banded ironstone. Western Australia is the other significant producer. Smaller occurrences are reported in places such as India, Brazil, and the United States.

Most hawk's eye reaches buyers as cabochons, beads, spheres, and tumbled pieces cut to line up the fibers so the light band shows to best effect. Because the same deposits yield blue, blue-and-gold, and fully golden material, a single locality can produce the whole tiger's eye family.

Traditional associations.

Hawk's eye has long been valued as a stone of watchful clarity, its very name suggesting a bird's sharp, far-seeing vision. Many people work with it for calm perspective, focus, and the sense of stepping back to see a situation whole.

As a cooler, blue member of the tiger's eye family, it is often linked to the Throat and Third Eye chakras, the element of Air, and the sign Capricorn. A common practice is to keep a piece close during planning or reflection. These are traditional associations, offered as lore rather than fact.

What to look for

Spotting the real thing.

Real hawk's eye shows a fine, fibrous internal structure and a soft chatoyant band that glides as you rotate the stone under a single light. The blue is muted and slightly grey, a natural, slightly uneven slate tone rather than a flat, candy blue. Turned in the light, quality pieces often reveal a hint of the gold-brown that ties them to tiger's eye.

The usual imitations are dyed quartzite, which shows an unnaturally even, saturated blue, and manufactured glass cat's eye, which produces a sharp, artificial line of light with no fibrous body. If the color looks too vivid and perfectly uniform, be skeptical. Ask whether the stone is natural hawk's eye, and whether any color has been added or enhanced.

How to live with it

Care & handling.

At 7 on the Mohs scale, hawk's eye is durable and well suited to everyday jewelry, including rings, and it is safe for a brief rinse in warm water with a soft cloth. Its polish holds up well, and the chatoyant band stays lively with basic care.

Avoid harsh acids and ultrasonic cleaners, and store it apart from other hard stones so the polished surface does not pick up scratches. Because crocidolite is an asbestos mineral, finished and polished pieces are safe to handle, but you should not cut, grind, or breathe the dust of raw material. To reset it energetically, many people use sound, smoke, or moonlight.
