Crystals for Scorpio: Birthstones and the Geology Behind Them
Scorpio runs from October 23 to November 21, and the stones tied to it lean dark and deep: black glass, banded green, a flash of blue that hides in the shadow. That fits the sign's reputation, but the stones themselves are just geology. Here's what they actually are, where they come from, and what the birthstone facts really say.
Scorpio's birthstones, the calendar version
Because Scorpio straddles two months, it carries more than one traditional birthstone. October leans on opal, a hydrated form of silica full of water, and tourmaline, a hard boron rich silicate. November leans on topaz, an aluminum silicate that rates a hard 8 on the Mohs scale, and citrine, the golden variety of quartz. None of this is a rule you have to follow. It's simply the lineage, and it shifts depending on which week of the season you were born in.

Black Obsidian
Obsidian is the stone most people picture for Scorpio, and it's not a crystal at all. It's volcanic glass, lava that cooled so fast the atoms never had time to line up into a mineral structure. Malachite
Malachite is the banded green stone that looks almost painted. That color is copper: malachite is a copper carbonate, and the swirling light and dark bands are layers that grew over time in copper rich ground. It's soft, only 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so it's worked into smooth polished pieces rather than left rough. Ours comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Labradorite
Labradorite is the gray stone that throws a sheet of blue or gold when you turn it toward the light. That effect, called labradorescence, comes from light bouncing between microscopic layers inside the feldspar, not from any coating. What the association actually means
