Crystals for Virgo: The Earth Sign's Stones and Where They Come From
Virgo runs from August 23 to September 22, an earth sign ruled by Mercury. The stones tied to it tend to be clear, ordered, and cool toned, which fits the sign's reputation but says more about tradition than about any power in the rock. Here's what those stones actually are, where ours come from, and what the birthstone facts hold up.
Virgo's birthstones, the calendar version
Virgo spans two months, so it carries two traditional birthstones. Peridot covers the late August window, a green gem quality form of the mineral olivine that forms in volcanic rock. Sapphire covers September, a blue variety of corundum and, at 9 on the Mohs scale, one of the hardest stones after diamond. Which one is yours depends on your date. Neither is required to feel like a Virgo stone.

Beyond the birthstones, a familiar group shows up across crystal traditions for the sign.
Amethyst
Amethyst is the crystal most people name for Virgo, even though it's not the calendar birthstone. It's a purple variety of quartz, colored by traces of iron and natural radiation deep in the earth, and it rates 7 on the Mohs scale. Ours is raw from Brazil, clustered from Uruguay, and pointed from Zambia. One honest note for shopping anywhere: amethyst is sometimes heated, which turns it golden and sells it as citrine, so natural amethyst should be labeled as such. Fluorite
Fluorite is the cool banded stone in greens and purples, and it's the one to handle with a little care. It's calcium fluoride, and at just 4 on the Mohs scale it's far softer than quartz, so it scratches and chips more easily. Ours comes from Namibia and China. Carnelian and moss agate
Two chalcedony stones round out the Virgo group. Carnelian brings a warm orange from iron oxide and a hard wearing 7 on the Mohs scale. Moss agate carries green mineral inclusions, usually iron or manganese, that spread through the stone like moss frozen in glass, which is where its earthy, garden linked reputation comes from.
