Oregon Sunstone
Oregon sunstone is a natural, copper-bearing feldspar found only in a few volcanic deposits in Oregon. Its warm colours and metallic shimmer come from real copper locked inside the crystal, not from any treatment. That distinction is the whole story, because it separates Oregon sunstone from a wave of copper-treated look-alikes.
The geology.
Oregon sunstone is a variety of labradorite, a calcium-sodium plagioclase feldspar. It crystallised inside basaltic lava flows in south-central and south-eastern Oregon around a million years ago, and weathering later freed the crystals from the eroding basalt.
What makes it special is copper. As the feldspar grew, tiny plates of native copper formed and became trapped along specific planes in the crystal. These platelets scatter light to produce the sunstone glitter, called aventurescence or schiller, and in higher concentrations they lend the stone its pink, red, and green body colours.
The copper is structural, meaning it is part of how the crystal formed, not something added later. Oregon sunstone rates roughly 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, a touch harder than many feldspars, which makes clean, transparent pieces suitable for jewellery.
The origins.
All true Oregon sunstone comes from Oregon, chiefly the high desert around Plush in Lake County and the Ponderosa mine area in Harney County. Some deposits sit on public land where hobbyists can dig, while others are commercial claims. This concentrated, traceable origin is part of the stone's appeal.
It became the official Oregon state gemstone in 1987. Because it is mined domestically and often sold untreated, Oregon sunstone has a clear, verifiable supply chain, which stands in sharp contrast to the murky origins claimed for some treated copper feldspar sold under other names.
Traditional associations.
Sunstone has long been linked to the sun, warmth, and vitality, and Oregon sunstone carries those associations along with a reputation for confidence and leadership. Many people work with it for motivation, optimism, and a sense of personal power.
Its copper content has also drawn associations with energy and flow in contemporary crystal lore. These are traditional and modern beliefs, offered as context rather than as health claims.
Spotting the real thing.
The key to Oregon sunstone is telling natural copper colour from copper treatment. In genuine Oregon material, the copper appears as tiny metallic platelets scattered irregularly through the stone, often catching the light as a glittery schiller. Under magnification you can sometimes see these flat, reflective flakes suspended inside the crystal.
The treated look-alike, usually marketed as andesine or red andesine, is pale feldspar that has had copper diffused into it at high temperature. Its colour tends to concentrate near the surface or the edges rather than sitting evenly through the stone, and it lacks the oriented copper platelets of natural sunstone. Claimed origins such as Tibet or Congo have often proven unreliable.
There is no single instant home test, so provenance matters. Buy Oregon sunstone from sellers who can confirm it was mined in Oregon and sold untreated. Natural inclusions, honest colour zoning, and a verifiable source are all reassuring signs.
Care & handling.
Oregon sunstone is relatively durable at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, but like all feldspar it has cleavage, so avoid hard blows. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and dry it well.
Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are best avoided because of the cleavage and any internal fractures. The stone is stable in light and will not fade, so gentle routine care keeps its copper glow bright.

Copper, the heart of the stone
Oregon sunstone's colours and shimmer both trace back to copper. During crystallisation, copper came out of solution and formed microscopic plates inside the feldspar, aligned along the crystal's internal planes. Light bouncing off these plates creates the metallic glitter called schiller. Where the copper is more concentrated and finely divided, it also tints the body of the stone pink, salmon, red, or green, and some crystals show more than one colour at once.
The andesine controversy
In the early 2000s, treaters in Asia learned to diffuse copper into pale feldspar at high temperature, producing attractive red and green gems cheaply. This material was widely sold as andesine, often with claimed origins in Tibet or the Congo, and it reached the market before testing revealed the copper colour was treated rather than natural. The episode damaged buyer confidence in copper-bearing feldspar generally, and it is the main reason Oregon sunstone sellers stress that their material is natural and untreated.
How to tell natural from treated
Natural Oregon sunstone carries copper as physical platelets, distinct flakes you can sometimes spot under a loupe, distributed unevenly through the crystal. Diffusion-treated feldspar instead shows colour that hugs the surface and edges, since the copper was driven in from outside, and it lacks those oriented internal platelets. Gemmological labs use magnification and spectroscopy to distinguish the two. For most buyers, the practical safeguard is a trustworthy seller and documented Oregon origin.
Where it is dug
The main Oregon sunstone areas are the high desert near Plush in Lake County and the Ponderosa mine region in Harney County. At some public sites, rockhounds can dig their own stones, which adds to the gem's popular following. Commercial mines produce the finer facet-grade and red and green material. Because production is domestic and localised, the supply chain is unusually transparent for a coloured gemstone.
Buying and value
Colourless and pale yellow Oregon sunstone is common and affordable. Value climbs with stronger colour, especially clean reds, greens, and bicolours, and with the intensity of the copper schiller. Larger, transparent, richly coloured stones are the most prized. Since the stone's whole reputation rests on being natural, documentation of untreated Oregon origin supports both value and trust.
